Troubleshooting by Pipeline Step

Resolve installation, trigger, mapping, import, labeling, BDF, and output problems in EyeSort 1.0.

Last updated: 2026-10-07

Installation

No EyeSort menu: confirm eegplugin_eyesort.m is directly inside the release folder under eeglab/plugins, restart EEGLAB, and run which eegplugin_eyesort -all. Remove duplicate paths.

Step 2 disabled: complete Step 1 with a usable dataset or batch reference file.

Step 2 mapping

Trigger validation fails: inspect unique(string({EEG.event.type})); correct trial, condition, item, and optional stimulus codes.

Missing region/condition column: compare the IA header with GUI names. Region matching tolerates case and a leading $, but spelling and region count must still agree.

No boundaries assigned: compare condition_number/item_number keys with numeric IA values and inspect missing_text_file_keys.

Fixations lack regions: verify fix_avgpos_x or the custom X field, numeric values, sentence offset, character width, whitespace, direction, and parsed boundaries.

d = EEG.eyesort_step2_diagnostics;
[d.fixation_events_seen d.fixations_assigned_to_region ...
 d.missing_x_field_events d.invalid_x_position_events]

Steps 3 and 4

Imported columns empty: inspect EEG.eyesort_import_diagnostics.missing_keys.

Zero-match label: inspect EEG.eyesort_last_label_diagnostics; start with region only, then add one filter at a time. Verify exact fields:

{EEG.event.current_region}
[EEG.event.region_pass_number]
[EEG.event.fixation_in_pass]
[EEG.event.is_last_in_pass]

Unexpected overwrite prompt: criteria overlap an existing EyeSort label. Choose and document replace/keep.

Outputs

Missing processed dataset: check the Step 1 output directory and MATLAB warnings. The expected name is *_processed.set, not a manually chosen label filename.

BDF empty/no labels: confirm nonempty eyesort_full_code and bdf_label_description in processed files. Convert type to numeric before BINLISTER.

If unresolved, report a reproducible issue.
