Previous/Next Region and Saccade Criteria

Distinguish region-sequence context from incoming and outgoing saccade direction.

Last updated: 2026-10-07

Different-region context

Label criteria named Previous Region and Next Region use the previous and next different region visited, stored as last_region_visited and next_region_visited. Consecutive fixations within the same region do not change these values.

For immediate fixation adjacency, inspect previous_fixation_region and next_fixation_region. These fields are informative but are not the GUI’s previous/next different-region filters.

Saccade direction

EyeSort finds the nearest preceding or following configured saccade within the trial and computes end-X minus start-X. Forward is positive for left-to-right and negative for right-to-left.

The 1.0 code uses hidden minimum amplitudes:

  • incoming direction requires absolute movement greater than 5 px;
  • outgoing direction requires absolute movement greater than 10 px.

A missing qualifying saccade causes a selected direction filter to fail. Leaving both direction boxes unchecked means any direction and does not require the threshold.

Labels remain fixation-only

These criteria decide whether a fixation candidate is labeled; they do not assign codes to the saccade event. Report direction criteria and thresholds when they affect inclusion.
